    Airborne microbial monitoring in an operational cleanroom using an instantaneous detection system and high efficiency microbial samplers

    The airborne microbial contamination in a non-unidirectional airflow cleanroom, occupied by personnel wearing either full cleanroom attire or only cleanroom undergarments was simultaneously determined using an instantaneous microbial detection (IMD) system and efficient microbial air samplers that detected both aerobic and anaerobic microbes. Depending on the type of cleanroom clothing, the IMD system recorded between 7 to 94 times more ā€˜biologicalā€™ particles than microbe carrying particles (MCPs) recovered by the air samplers. Change in the airborne concentration of ā€˜biologicalā€™ particles due to the different clothing was not consistent with the change in the concentration of MCPs. The median size of the ā€˜biologicalā€™ particles was smaller than the MCPs and the associated particle size distributions were considerably different. A number of sterile materials in the cleanroom were shown to disperse substantial quantities of ā€˜biologicalā€™ particles and it was concluded that the number of particles of microbiological origin, and the relationship between the counts of ā€˜biologicalā€™ particles to MCPs, were masked by non-microbial fluorescent particles dispersed from these materials. Consequently, adequate monitoring of this type of cleanroom operation to confirm appropriate airborne microbiological contamination control, using only an IMD system of the type used for this programme of work, is considered to be unfeasible. However, if the IMD system could be improved to more accurately differentiate between micro-organisms and non-microbial fluorescent particles, or if the dispersion of fluorescent particles from nonmicrobiological cleanroom materials could be reduced, then this system should provide an effective cleanroom airborne monitoring method

    The transition toward a post-capitalist knowledge-oriented economy has resulted in an increasingly competitive academic environment, where the success of faculty is dependent on their research productivity. This study examines the personal and institutional determinants of the quantity and quality of the research productivity of hospitality and tourism management faculty in US institutions. A survey of 98 faculty found that a different set of determinants impact the quantity and quality aspects of research productivity. Also, institutional determinants were found to play a larger role, indicating the need for administrators to strive for a culture that is supportive of and an infrastructure that is conducive to their facultyā€™s research success. The authors use the field of hospitality and tourism management as a case study to develop a holistic and cohesive framework for knowledge worker productivity that can guide the evaluation, hiring, and development of researchers

From racism, a deep hatred has spawned for other races. To the extremes, it has led to violence and murder, and most Americans believe it is more prevalently outspoken today than it has been in the last 20 years (Schaefer & Edwards, 2022). This thesis project consists of a Disrupting Racism curriculum for approximately 3rd grade, which is situated in the literature on racism and education. Grounded in culturally relevant pedagogy (Ladson-Billings,1995), the curricula intent is to enhance childrenā€™s understanding and acceptance of racial diversity and unity. It is designed as a five-week program to be delivered in an afterschool setting

    Nitrification-denitrification in WSP: a mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in maturation ponds

    A pilot-scale primary maturation pond was spiked with 15N-labelled ammonia (15NH4Cl) and 15N labelled nitrite (Na15NO2), in order to improve current understanding of the dynamics of inorganic nitrogen transformations and removal in WSP systems. Stable isotope analysis of Ī“15N showed that nitrification could be considered as an intermediate step in WSP, which is masked by simultaneous denitrification, under conditions of low algal activity. Molecular microbiology analysis showed that denitrification can be considered a feasible mechanism for permanent nitrogen removal in WSP, which may be supported either by ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB) or by methanotrophs, in addition to nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB). However, the relative supremacy of the denitrification process over other nitrogen removal mechanisms (e.g., biological uptake) depends upon phytoplanktonic activity

    Heavy metals that are known to be toxic exist in carbonaceous chrondrites at abundances considerably in excess to that of the terrestrial crust. An impactor of relatively undifferentiated cosmic matter would inject into the terrestrial environment large quantities of toxic elements. The abundances of toxic metals found in the Allende CV carbonaceous chondrite and the ratio of meteoritic abundance to crustal abundance are: Cr, 3630 PPM, 30X; Co, 662 PPM, 23X; ni, 13300 PPm, 134X; se, 8.2 PPM, 164X; Os, 0.828 PPM, 166X. The resulting areal density for global dispersal of impactor derived heavy metals and their dilution with terrestrial ejecta are important factors in the determination of the significance of impactor heavy metal toxicity as a kill mechanism in impact caused mass extinctions. A 10 km-diameter asteroid having a density of 3 gram per cu cm would yield a global areal density of impact dispersed chondritic material of 3 kg per square meter. The present areal density of living matter on the terrestrial land surface is 1 kg per square meter. Dilution of impactor material with terrestrial ejecta is determined by energetics, with the mass of ejecta estimated to be in the range of 10 to 100 times that of the mass of the impactor. Because a pelagic impact would be the most likely case, the result would be a heavy metal rainout
